Origins of Life
The elegance of life from evolution is awesome, and gives us more reason, not less reason to believe in God. Many people buy into the concept of God as a watchmaker. The logic is this:
1.) A watch is complex.
2.) The watch must have a designer.
3.) The watch continues to work without the designer.
4.) Life is complex.
5.) Life must have a designer.
6.) Life can continue to work without the designer.
But there is a flaw in this logic, as the following proof shows.
1.) Electric current is the flow of electrons.
2.) My electricity comes from the electric company.
3.) Lighting is the flow of electrons.
4.) Lightning must come through the electric company.
Doesn’t work. So then how did self-replicating organisms arise in the first place? Scientists still do not know for sure. Experiments from Stanley Miller show that element-rich, watery mix could have been struck with electricity and formed organic molecules. But how did self-replicating, information-carrying molecules assemble spontaneously, with its neat sugar-phosphate backbone and neatly organized double helix of organic bases. It is next to impossible for this to arise on its own. Especially because DNA cannot copy itself. Some say RNA was formed first, but RNA cannot be created in a Miller-esque experiment. We need to be careful not to put “God in the gaps.” You cannot just place God in a place where we do not understand something yet scientifically, as this really causes more problems than good in the long run.
Darwin proposed that all living organisms are descended from a small set of common ancestors and that random variations appeared, and that organisms odds at survival or extinction were based on its abilities (natural selection). But even Darwin was amazed at this, “There is a grandeur in this view of life, having originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or one and that, whilst this planet was cycling…from so simple a beginning, endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved.” It turns out these variations are caused by mutations, or changes, in an organisms DNA structure, which is converted into different functions and forms. To avoid the process of DNA to protein, I will insert this image, which sums it up nicely:
This is so intricate! How elegant! Evolution as a mechanism, can and must be true. But that says nothing about the nature of its author. These are reasons to believe more, not less. I will speak more of evolution later.
