The Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin), or Stinkbird, is a lovely plumed tropical bird which lives in the swamps, riverine forests, and mangroves near the Amazon River.
The Strange and Wonderful Hoatzin
The bird is pheasant-sized (65 cm long). It has a featherless head that had blue-coloured skin, which emphasizes its dark, rich red eyes. On its head it has a ruddy crest. The body of the bird is dark brown with white accents.
The Hoatzin eats the abundant leaves and fruits. Instead of normal bird digestion, Hoatzins use bacterial fermentation in the front of the gut, much like cows and other bovines. Because of the fermentation of vegetation so near to the bird’s mouth, the Hoatzin has been known to have a rather unpleasant odor.
Even this bird has wonderful coloration, is extremely curious, and does not fly well, it is not endangered. That odor I previously mentioned protects it from hunting. Bad breath to the rescue.
